Timeline of the Sports Gambling Scandal: From Jontay Porter to Terry Rozier

Title: Controversies Mount as U.S. Sports Betting Landscape Expands

Date: January 31, 2025

In a groundbreaking decision on May 14, 2018, the U.S. Supreme Court repealed the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act (PASPA) of 1992, permitting all states to legalize sports betting. Six years later, 39 states, alongside the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico, have established legal betting markets, with a staggering $330 billion wagered.

However, this booming market has not come without challenges. A surge in scandals has prompted many professional and collegiate athletes to face suspensions or terminations due to gambling infractions. Notably, several athletes, including NBA player Jontay Porter, were banned for life after revealing confidential information to bettors. Additionally, at least one bettor admitted to obstructing justice in connection with a college baseball betting scandal.

The NFL has seen numerous suspensions for gambling violations, including the one-year ban of Calvin Ridley in 2022 for betting on games during injury leave, while Iowa State and Fresno State have launched investigations into suspicious gambling activities among their athletes.

Despite the legal sportsbook industry’s efforts to monitor betting practices, underlying issues persist, including the thriving underground betting market, where unlicensed bookmakers operate and accumulate high-profile clients.

With California and Texas—two of the largest states—still lacking legalized sports betting, the market holds considerable potential for future growth. Experts and stakeholders anticipate increased betting activity, yet many acknowledge a corresponding rise in controversies and violations within the sports sphere.

As the landscape continues to evolve, the integrity of sports, alongside the regulations surrounding betting, remains a pressing concern, demanding vigilance from leagues and authorities alike.
