Maine Lawmaker Laurel Libby: Supreme Court Needs to Resolve Trans Sports Debate

Maine Lawmaker Challenges Censure Over Transgender Athlete Issue, Appeals to Supreme Court

AUGUSTA, ME — Maine State Representative Laurel Libby is seeking intervention from the Supreme Court in a contentious legal battle that centers around her voting and speaking rights in the state legislature. This conflict arose after she vocally opposed the participation of transgender athletes in girls’ sports, leading to her ban from voting or speaking in the legislature.

Libby, a Republican, gained media attention after a social media post highlighted a trans athlete’s dominance in girls’ events, such as cross-country and track. "I, along with two-thirds of my fellow Mainers, agree that it’s absolutely not fair," Libby stated on Fox News, citing an instance in which a trans-identifying athlete previously ranked 172nd among boys but went on to win girls’ events.

In response to her outspoken views, House Speaker Ryan Fecteau and the Democratic majority censured Libby, offering to restore her rights if she issued an apology—an offer she rejected. "For more than two months, my constituents have not had a voice," Libby lamented.

Following a legal setback in U.S. District Court, where her case was ruled against by Judge Melissa DuBose, Libby remains undeterred. The 1st Circuit Court of Appeals also sided against her. Yet, she insists on petitioning the Supreme Court for a definitive ruling on the matter, asserting the need for a “fair, safe, and level playing field” for female athletes.

Simultaneously, the Justice Department has filed a lawsuit against Maine for defying federal guidelines aimed at protecting biological female participants in sports. As the issue escalates, Libby continues to champion First Amendment rights and fair competition for women athletes.
