Press Release: Iconic Tower Planned for Portland’s Old Port
Portland, ME – In a groundbreaking announcement on Tuesday, East Brown Cow, a local real estate developer, and renowned architect Moshe Safdie revealed plans for a transformative project in Portland’s historic Old Port. The centerpiece of the development, dubbed Old Port Square, is set to feature Maine’s tallest building, a 30-story, 350-foot luxury high-rise that will include residential apartments and a restaurant at its peak.
Situated on a city block bordered by Middle, Union, and Fore streets, Old Port Square will revamp the area currently occupied by the mid-rise bank buildings, parking garages, and quaint shops of Exchange Street. Designed with inspiration from Maine’s iconic lighthouses, Safdie’s design aims to seamlessly blend with the coastal aesthetic.
The existing tallest building in Maine is a contentious topic. While Saint Joseph’s Church in Biddeford stands at 235 feet, Portland’s Casco building asserts its place despite being shorter. However, the proposed high-rise has the potential to redefine Portland’s skyline and claim the title.
The Old Port Square development also aims to be environmentally conscious. Renovations of existing structures, including the Fore Street Garage, will incorporate solar panels, electric vehicle charging stations, and a striking illuminated facade. Three buildings on Middle Street will be repurposed for upscale retail and boutique lofts, enhancing the city’s vibrant commercial landscape.
Alongside these improvements, new pedestrian walkways and landscaping are planned to foster a more accessible and welcoming atmosphere.
While the city of Portland has received initial applications for the project, city spokesperson Jessica Grondin noted that the proposals are still under review and not yet approved. If realized, the Old Port Square development promises to be a landmark addition to Portland’s architectural heritage.
