State Legislators Must Take Action to Safeguard the Health Needs of Mainers

Press Release: Urgent Need for Funding to Support Family Planning Services in Maine

Midcoast Maine — Vanessa Shields-Haas, a dedicated family nurse practitioner at Maine Family Planning, has raised concerns about the potential disruption of crucial sexual and reproductive healthcare services in the region due to frozen federal funding. With over 15 years of experience, Shields-Haas serves a diverse patient demographic, including teens, adults, and seniors, often caring for multiple generations within families.

The ongoing threat to federal family planning funds has sparked a call to action for Maine’s lawmakers to support LD 143, a proposed legislation which aims to allocate $6.18 million to bolster the state’s family planning care network. Sponsored by Senate Majority Leader Teresa Pierce and backed by Democratic leadership, this funding is critical for maintaining care at Maine Family Planning’s 19 clinics that serve nearly 30,000 patients annually.

Shields-Haas emphasizes that Maine Family Planning not only provides sexual and reproductive health services—such as contraceptive care and screenings—but also extends to primary care, mental health services, and nutrition support. Many patients depend on these services as their only healthcare option for the year, with around 70% qualifying for free or reduced-cost care.

The potential funding cuts could significantly impact healthcare availability in predominantly rural areas of Maine. By preventing patients from excessively relying on emergency services for basic health issues, Maine Family Planning helps manage community healthcare costs effectively.

With rising operational costs and stagnant funding, the future of essential services is precarious. Shields-Haas lauds state legislators for advancing LD 143 and urges them to finalize the funding to ensure continued access to vital healthcare services. Advocates encourage those who benefit from these services to contact their state representatives and express support for LD 143.
