Tyler Uberstine: A Journey of Perseverance to the Portland Sea Dogs
Portland, ME – Tyler Uberstine, a 25-year-old pitcher for the Portland Sea Dogs, exemplifies true perseverance in baseball. Hailing from Santa Monica, California, Uberstine faced early setbacks, having been cut from his high school baseball team at Chaminade Prep twice. It wasn’t until a significant growth spurt during his later high school years that he began to discover his potential, transforming from a 5’6" player with a 77 mph fastball to a formidable 6’1", 200-pound athlete now capable of reaching the mid-90s.
During his college years, Uberstine honed his skills at the University of Southern California, initially joining the club team before deciding to walk on to the varsity squad. Although he didn’t make the roster, this experience fueled his determination. He later transferred to Northwestern, where he shined during a truncated 2020 season.
Drafted by the Boston Red Sox in the 19th round in 2021, Uberstine’s journey faced another hurdle when he underwent Tommy John surgery, keeping him sidelined for the entirety of the 2023 season and much of 2024. However, he continued to develop, showcasing newfound pitches and confidence during a stint in the Arizona Fall League.
This season, Uberstine has made five starts for the Sea Dogs, boasting a solid 3.75 ERA and 29 strikeouts in 24 innings. His pitching coach, Sean Isaac, commended his growth, highlighting the impressive range of pitches he can now command. “He’s been a horse for us,” remarked Sea Dogs manager Chad Epperson.
