Historic Bell Tower Reinstalled at Monmouth Academy
MONMOUTH — A significant moment in local history unfolded Thursday morning as a newly rebuilt bell tower was hoisted atop the former Monmouth Academy on Academy Road. This event marks a milestone in the restoration project of the iconic structure, which is set to serve as a multi-functional space for both community and private events.
The project is a collaborative effort between the town of Monmouth and the Monmouth Academy Rebuilding Committee. As the crane lifted the bell tower into place, a group of current Monmouth Academy students gathered to witness the event alongside several alumni, including notable figures such as Alberta Kemp Burnham, a 1954 graduate. The atmosphere was filled with nostalgia and pride as former students reflected on their time at the school.
Committee members Kristin Sanborn and Laurie Fairchild Gifford were also present. Gifford’s connection to the school is particularly poignant, as her father previously served as the principal, adding a personal touch to the community’s efforts in reviving their educational landmark.
The restored bell tower not only symbolizes the town’s commitment to preserving its educational heritage but also illustrates a broader vision for the future of the building, which will host various functions benefiting the community.
This project embodies the spirit of Monmouth and showcases the collective dedication of past and present residents to maintain their historic landmarks. As the bell now tolls once again, the community looks forward to the new opportunities the restored academy will bring.
