Maine’s Catholic Community Responds to the Election of Pope Leo XIV, the First American-Born Pontiff

Historic Selection: Cardinal Robert Prevost Becomes First American Pope

PORTLAND, Maine — A historic moment for the Roman Catholic Church unfolded Thursday as white smoke billowed from the Sistine Chapel, confirming the election of the new pope. Cardinal Robert Prevost, a member of the Augustinian religious order, was selected as the first American pope in the Church’s 2,000-year history, now taking on the name Pope Leo XIV.

Born in Chicago and a citizen of Peru, Pope Leo XIV succeeds Pope Francis, who passed away on April 21 at 88 years old. The conclave, attended by over 130 cardinals, culminated in the selection of the Church’s 267th pope.

In his first address to a crowd of 150,000 in Saint Peter’s Square, Pope Leo reflected on his missionary work and tenure as archbishop of Chiclayo, Peru. His greeting, "Peace be with you all," resonated strongly, as Bishop James Ruggieri of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Portland characterized this moment as "exciting" and essential for the Church’s forward momentum.

"Bishop Ruggieri expressed his admiration for the new pontiff, whom he described as ‘capable’ and ‘competent.’ Having met Pope Leo at an orientation for new bishops, he emphasized the pope’s unique blend of American roots and international experience," Ruggieri shared.

While Bishop Ruggieri expects Pope Leo to continue the Church’s mission of spreading the word of God, he does not anticipate a specific American-centric influence in the papacy. Instead, he envisions a leader well-equipped to navigate the complexities of the global Church.

As the Catholic community rallies around this new chapter, Pope Leo XIV’s leadership marks a significant milestone for both American and international Catholics alike.
