Collins Claims Canadian Students Coming to Maine Experience ‘Excessive Searches’

Canadian Students Face Increased Border Scrutiny, Senator Collins Raises Concerns

Aroostook County, ME – Senator Susan Collins has voiced strong concerns regarding the "excessive" security screenings and questioning faced by Canadian students crossing the northern border to attend schools in Maine. During a budget hearing with Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem, Collins highlighted the plight of roughly 75 Canadian students, specifically those at the University of Maine Presque Isle and its Fort Kent campus, who have reported increased scrutiny despite holding valid visas and documentation.

Collins, a Republican and chair of the Senate Appropriations Committee, emphasized the need for a balanced approach to border security, stating, "There are so many others who do deserve scrutiny, but these are duly enrolled Canadian students, and they have been crossing the border without trouble." The senator confirmed that the experiences of these students have led some to switch to online classes this semester.

The heightened border security comes amid a broader national policy aimed at tightening border controls, initiated during the Trump administration’s campaign against illegal immigration and trafficking. Critics argue that these measures, including recent tariffs on Canada, may be contributing to the issue.

In related discussions, Collins urged increased federal resources to tackle illicit marijuana grow operations in Maine associated with Chinese gangs. She highlighted the alarming rise of over 270 grow sites in the state, generating an estimated $4.3 billion in illegal revenue. FBI Director Kash Patel assured progress in reallocating agents to address such crimes, emphasizing the need to thwart foreign influences.

While Collins sought expedited visa processes for foreign workers in Maine’s hospitality and agricultural sectors, Noem showed little willingness to commit to changes, indicating ongoing considerations.

Collins remains focused on ensuring student safety and supporting Maine’s communities against criminal enterprises.
