Hancock County Soil & Water Conservation District Celebrates World Fish Migration Day with Community Events

Hancock County, ME — In celebration of World Fish Migration Day on May 25, the Hancock County Soil & Water Conservation District (HCSWCD) invites the community to engage in two significant watershed events, offering a unique opportunity to shape the future of local waterways.

Union River Watershed Summit: May 16-17
Themed “Looking Backward/Looking Forward,” the summit will be hosted by HCSWCD, Green Ellsworth, and various partners. With a recent Supreme Court ruling opening new possibilities for the long-standing Union River dams, community input is crucial. Participants can attend a virtual session on the river’s pre-dam history on May 16 at 4 p.m. (register at https://uregina-ca.zoom.us/meeting/register/nN99BopWRtCmr82jpTnc2g). The in-person programs on May 17 at Moore Community Center (9:30 a.m. – 3:30 p.m.) include presentations by Dwayne Shaw from the Downeast Salmon Federation and the Ellsworth Historical Society, a tour of the Union River Dam’s historic powerhouse, and an economic impact study preview by the Frenchman Bay Conservancy. Attendees can enjoy a free brown bag lunch while engaging with a 20-foot brook trout art installation.

Narramissic-Orland Migratory Fish Celebration: May 24
This event, hosted by the Town of Orland along with the Great Pond Conservation Trust and HCSWCD, will take place on Saturday, May 24, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Fish Point Road/Castine Road, Orland Village. Participants can observe river herring migrations, visit educational displays on fish ecology, and enjoy wildlife viewing opportunities.

Community members are encouraged to participate in these events as their voices matter in discussions about the stewardship of precious water resources.
