Beaver Cove, Maine – The recent acquisition of over 1,400 acres of prime hiking land around Moosehead Lake has ignited rumors of an ultra-wealthy landowner determined to reshape the area. Select Board Chair Joe Babbitt notes, “Everyone is asking questions, with speculation ranging from the sultan of Egypt to various billionaires.”
The land, including Burnt Jacket Mountain and 12,000 feet of lake frontage, was purchased for $8.1 million in 2022 through two holding companies. Since the new owner applied for a permit to build a 3,750-square-foot home, the previously accessible trails closed to the public, leaving many community members concerned.
Moosehead Lake has traditionally attracted wealthy buyers seeking anonymity through corporate transactions. Local business owner Beverly Burgess expressed uncertainty about the new owner’s intentions, stating, “There was chatter that it could be a corporation or someone looking to build a resort.”
Historically, the land was owned by paper companies that permitted public access, but as these companies sold off parcels, recreational access dwindled. Carla Ritchie, president of the Moosehead Regional Land Trust, highlighted the importance of preserving public access to the area.
The closure has already impacted local businesses reliant on outdoor tourism. Burgess notes, “The loss saddens many locals” who appreciate the recreational opportunities the site provided. Babbitt worries about the potential for large-scale developments, emphasizing the need for clarity around the new owner’s plans.
