Cheverus Girls Lacrosse Secures Historic Win Against Falmouth
FALMOUTH — The Cheverus girls lacrosse team marked a significant milestone with an 11-9 victory over the storied Falmouth squad on Thursday, igniting speculation about whether this was their first win against the Navigators. Cheverus sophomore Sophia Tamulevich, who netted three goals including the decisive score with 9:07 remaining, expressed the importance of the win, stating, “This was a big win for us.”
Head coach Will Tuttle, in his second year at the helm, echoed this sentiment, unsure if it was indeed a historic victory but acknowledging the significance regardless. The win propelled Cheverus to a strong 6-1 record, placing them atop a fiercely competitive Class A division with 22 teams vying for glory this season.
As the halfway point approaches, the Class A division has revealed itself to be one of the most competitive in Maine, with three teams—Kennebunk, Gorham, and Marshwood—still undefeated. Traditional powerhouses, including last year’s state champion Yarmouth and runner-up Falmouth, have faced unprecedented challenges, revealing the depth of talent across the division.
The game was closely contested, tied at multiple points before Cheverus surged ahead with two quick goals in the fourth quarter. Sydney Brunelle, who contributed two goals to the Stags’ effort, remarked on the tight competition, indicating that each game has become crucial in this unpredictable season.
With standout wins over Yarmouth and Falmouth, Cheverus is emerging as a legitimate contender for the upcoming state championship, which is set for June 21 at Fitzpatrick Stadium. “This is a season where anyone can have a win and anyone can have a loss,” Brunelle noted, underscoring the intensity and excitement of the current lacrosse landscape in Maine.
