Binghamton Tops Maine in Baseball Showdown
ORONO – Binghamton University’s baseball team triumphed over the University of Maine, 9-4, in a hard-fought game on Friday, marking the Black Bears’ fourth consecutive loss. The matchup, part of a three-game series held at Mahaney Diamond, showcased a dramatic seventh inning where Maine managed to tie the game at 4-4 before ultimately falling short.
The Bearcats kicked off the scoring with a run in the first inning. However, Maine quickly answered in the second when Damon Gaither delivered a clutch bloop single, scoring Drew Reynolds after he had tripled two batters prior. Binghamton responded with authority, hitting two solo home runs—one in the third and another in the sixth—to extend their lead to 3-1.
By the seventh inning, the Bearcats boosted their advantage to 4-1. Showing resilience, Maine rallied to score three runs in the bottom of the seventh, leveling the game at 4-4. However, momentum shifted back to Binghamton in the eighth as they added two runs, followed by three more in the ninth, sealing their victory at 9-4.
Colin Fitzgerald took the loss for Maine, pitching 6.2 innings, yielding four earned runs, and striking out five batters. Maine will aim for redemption as they prepare to face the Bearcats again in game two of the weekend series, set for a 7 p.m. first pitch tomorrow. The Black Bears will look to rebound and break their losing streak against a formidable Binghamton squad.
