Senator Susan Collins Celebrates Significant Milestones in Presque Isle
Presque Isle, ME — U.S. Senator Susan Collins marked two pivotal moments during her visit to Presque Isle on Saturday. She addressed the 60th graduating class of Northern Maine Community College and participated in a groundbreaking ceremony for a new airport terminal project.
The $38 million terminal, set to replace a 70-year-old building originally designed as a fire station, aims to meet modern Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) standards. The total cost of the project, including associated groundwork, will reach $52.6 million, bolstered by $20.5 million in congressionally directed spending announced by Collins in 2024.
Local opinions are divided regarding the project. Some residents question if the area can sustain a new 33,000-square-foot terminal, while others see it as a stepping stone for regional growth and opportunity. Collins emphasized the necessity of the new facility, stating, “It’s a real problem that the current terminal does not meet FAA standards. That puts air travel at risk for this region.” She believes the terminal will enhance safety and security, as well as foster economic development.
While speaking to graduates, Collins highlighted the importance of perseverance and community, traits inherent in Aroostook County’s culture. She encouraged students to stay in Maine and contribute their talents locally. “We need you,” she urged the graduates, advocating for their involvement in community service, whether through volunteering or mentorship.
In her grounded address, Collins connected the new terminal’s potential impact on attracting healthcare providers and tourists with the values of hard work and optimism that define both the graduates and the Presque Isle community.
