Leftist Organizations He Previously Backed Turn Against Jared Golden as Democrats Adopt Purity Standards

Congressman Jared Golden Faces Criticism from Progressive Group Indivisible

Second District Congressman Jared Golden (D-ME) is facing backlash from the progressive group Indivisible for his lack of town hall meetings. Known for resisting President Trump’s agenda, Indivisible is also challenging Democrats who, like Golden, fail to meet their purity standards. Despite his unique stance on issues like tariffs and regularly defying party leadership, Golden is being singled out for criticism.

Recently, Indivisible Maine protested at an event attended by Golden at Colby College, emphasizing his failure to engage with constituents directly. Golden responded, stating that while Indivisible claims to be "indivisible," they are fostering division within the Democratic Party. This sentiment resonated with some, as former state representative Diane Russell pointed out that Golden’s base had played a crucial role in his election.

In March, Indivisible hosted an "empty chair" event in Bangor to highlight Golden’s absence at town halls, contrasting his engagement with that of First District Congresswoman Chellie Pingree, who has held multiple meetings with constituents. Interestingly, neither of Maine’s senators has recently held town hall meetings either.

Despite these criticisms, Golden has actively supported local efforts, including aiding the Maine People’s Alliance (MPA) in securing federal grants. However, the group’s recent endorsement of Secretary of State Shenna Bellows for the 2026 gubernatorial race adds complexity to the political landscape, particularly with speculation about Golden’s future moves.

As intraparty conflicts intensify, including a $20 million DNC fund earmarked for primary challenges against seasoned Democrats, Golden’s situation becomes more precarious. His flirts with alternative political parties like No Labels may reflect a growing discontent with party loyalty in a time of escalating tensions within the Democratic Party. As of now, no prominent Maine Democrats have publicly defended Golden amidst the unfolding criticisms.
