Press Release: Maine Student Athletes Protest Transgender Inclusion in Girls’ Sports
A group of four female athletes from Presque Isle High School took center stage in a political rally at the Maine State Capitol in Augusta last week, advocating against the inclusion of biological males in girls’ sports. This demonstration comes amid ongoing legislative conflicts over three bills aimed at banning trans athletes from competing in girls’ categories, a contentious issue causing turmoil within state sports.
Among them was Hailey Himes, a track athlete and first-time protester, who was inspired to take action following a school assignment that highlighted the unfairness she felt after witnessing a trans athlete win first place in a girls’ pole vault competition. “It was discouraging, especially for those not placing first,” Himes remarked. Along with fellow athletes Cassidy Carlisle, Lucy Cheney, and Carrlyn Buck, the group marched to voice their concerns against the Democratic-majority legislature, which supports continued trans participation.
The young activists expressed their frustrations over feeling unheard amid a supportive atmosphere for pro-trans speakers and reported a dismissive attitude from lawmakers. Himes articulated the emotional impact on her teammates, stating that competing against trans athletes felt disheartening due to the biological advantages they perceive trans males to have.
Despite internal challenges within their school, including prior controversies surrounding trans athletes, the girls remain committed to advocating for LD 868, LD 233, and LD 1134, legislation designed to protect women’s sports. Surveys indicate that a significant majority of Maine voters support restricting women’s sports to biological females. However, Governor Janet Mills stands firm against these bills, risking federal funding for schools and stating, “I’m happy to go to court” over the matter.
The athletes plan continued lobbying efforts to ensure that their voices are heard in the ongoing debate over athlete inclusion and fairness in sports.
