New Bookstore to Open in Renovated Barn in Bar Harbor

Press Release: New Bookstore Set to Open in Bar Harbor After Extensive Renovation

BAR HARBOR, ME – A community-focused Bar Harbor resident is set to unveil her latest venture: Hidden Barn Books, a newly renovated bookstore located inside a historic 19th-century barn. The grand opening is slated for June 14, with anticipation building among local residents.

Owner Genie Thorndike has transformed the barn—originally built in 1883 and vacant for years—into a cozy retail space, preserving its rustic charm. The bookstore will offer approximately 1,800 square feet of shopping space, excluding a spacious loft, creating an inviting environment for bibliophiles.

Despite the challenges faced by brick-and-mortar bookstores in the digital age, Thorndike remains optimistic. She envisions Hidden Barn Books as not just a retail space, but a community hub where locals can gather for readings, book clubs, and literary events. "There’s room for a local bookstore where people can share a love of books," she stated confidently.

The landscape of independent bookstores has evolved significantly since the widespread closures a decade ago. While notable retailers have shut their doors, a resurgence of independent bookshops across the country illustrates a growing demand for community-centric spaces. Thorndike is determined to be part of this trend, emphasizing personalized service and a community-oriented atmosphere.

In a pre-opening event, local poet Christian Barter will hold a public reading at the bookstore on May 18, igniting local interest and engagement before the official launch. Unlike other local retailers, Hidden Barn Books will specialize solely in books, boasting a dedicated children’s section while encouraging visitors to enjoy their coffee from nearby cafés.

With plans for continued growth in Bar Harbor’s vibrant summer tourism scene, Thorndike believes Hidden Barn Books will thrive alongside established stores, contributing to the town’s literary culture.
