Annual Tree and Shrub Sale Returns to Central Maine After Pandemic Hiatus
CLINTON, Maine (WABI) – Fedco Seeds, a well-known seed and tree cooperative in Central Maine, is excited to announce the return of its annual surplus sale this weekend after a hiatus that began in 2019 due to the pandemic. The tradition, which started in the 1980s, marks the end of their tree season and allows customers to explore a wide selection of trees and shrubs.
“This sale is a joyous occasion for our community,” said Coordinator Jen Ries. “Buying a tree is an investment, not just for individuals but for future generations.” The event serves as one of the rare opportunities for Fedco staff to engage directly with customers, given that 95% of their sales are conducted online.
Ries noted the excitement surrounding the sale after a "long rest," emphasizing the energy and preparation involved in bringing the event back. Employees have been engaged in planning and coordinating the sale year-round, with farmers actively tending to crops for upcoming seasons.
This year’s sale boasts a significant overstock, primarily due to spring weather issues, staffing shortages, and shipping delays, with plenty of fruit trees available at two-for-one discounts. "Fruit trees empower people to grow their own food, promoting self-reliance within our community," Ries remarked.
The tree warehouse will be open from 9 AM to 3 PM on Saturday and Sunday at 213 Hinckley Road. Additionally, Fedco’s organic grower supply will also welcome customers on Saturday. The anticipated influx of visitors from across the Northeast highlights the sale’s importance in fostering community connections and promoting sustainable living practices.
