Majority of Maine Voters Prefer Trump Over Mills in Transgender Sports Debate

Poll Reveals Broad Opposition to Progressive Education Policies in Maine

A recent poll shows a bipartisan majority of Maine voters oppose several progressive education initiatives championed by Governor Janet Mills and the Democratic-controlled Legislature, indicating potential pushback against their agenda. The survey, conducted by SPRY Strategies from April 22-25, 2025, included 500 likely voters and was commissioned by the parental rights group Courage is a Habit.

The poll reveals that a significant 68% of respondents oppose K-12 health clinics prescribing medications such as hormone blockers to minors without parental consent. Similarly, 67.2% oppose schools sharing student data with external organizations. A notable 69.1% of voters are against teaching comprehensive sex education, including sensitive topics like masturbation to kindergarteners.

Concerns extend to policies on gender identity; 58.3% oppose the notion that students can be “born in the wrong body,” while 68% disapprove of school counselors promoting transgenderism. Moreover, 67.9% of respondents oppose withholding information from parents if a child expresses gender confusion.

These findings underscore a disconnect between the administration’s priorities and voter sentiment. With 59.2% of participants advocating for local governance in K-12 education, there’s a clear call for greater parental control. Dissatisfaction with current education standards is evident, with 61.5% claiming that K-12 education is worse than a decade ago.

Additionally, 52.2% of respondents support compliance with President Donald Trump’s executive order restricting biological males from competing in women’s sports, reflecting alignment with recent federal mandates.

Governor Mills’ approval rating is at 51.6%, with nearly half of voters expressing disapproval, highlighting the challenges for her administration as public sentiment leans toward traditional educational approaches. The poll suggests that educational policies aligned with parental rights and conservative values are resonating strongly with Maine voters.
