Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds Invest Big in Wrexham AFC
Hollywood actors Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds have made headlines for their substantial investment in Wrexham AFC, the Welsh soccer club they purchased in November 2020 for $2.5 million. Their commitment continues to grow as the club experiences remarkable success, gaining promotion three times over the past three years.
During the season two premiere of "Welcome to Wrexham" in September 2023, Reynolds humorously suggested he might "sell" one of his children to fund the nearly $25.5 million needed for the team’s expansion. With an estimated loss of $12 million reported during an October episode, McElhenney expressed concerns about their financial situation, prompting discussions on how to turn the tide towards profitability.
Wrexham’s ambitious stadium renovations, including plans for a new stand, have faced hurdles, including a recent denial for government funding. Nonetheless, Wrexham’s executive director, Humphrey Ker, detailed the club’s decision to move ahead with plans, albeit with setbacks contributing to a net loss of $456,458.
Adding to their commitment, McElhenney and Reynolds have also invested in the club’s women’s team, which recently transitioned to the semiprofessional Adran Premier League, allowing players to be compensated for their efforts.
The team’s value currently sits at nearly $12 million, with an annual wage bill of $8.22 million. As the club approaches a critical juncture in its journey, the duo faces a decisive choice: pursue a path of sustainability in League One or take a high-stakes gamble with an estimated $50 million to secure a spot in the Championship League.
“I just say, let’s go for it,” Reynolds proclaimed, underscoring their determination to transform Wrexham AFC into a powerhouse in the competitive world of soccer.
