New Data Reveals Declining Overdose Rates in Maine and Across the U.S.

Maine Sees Decline in Overdose Deaths Amid Rising Methamphetamine Use

PORTLAND, Maine — Maine is experiencing a significant decline in overdose deaths, consistent with a nationwide trend. Recent data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) indicates that the U.S. saw a 27% decrease in overdose fatalities over the past year, with Maine reporting a 20% reduction.

Tom Doherty, executive director of Milestone Recovery in Portland, emphasized the importance of enhanced treatment services and the ongoing efforts to combat the stigma associated with seeking help. “People are beginning to see that treatment is accessible, with community role models showcasing recovery from substance use disorders,” Doherty stated.

While many overdose deaths are linked to opioids, a concerning rise in methamphetamine use has been observed in Portland. Three years ago, only 14% of individuals entering detox were using stimulants, but that figure has now nearly doubled to 28% or 29%. Doherty pointed out that overdose risks from meth are heightened, especially since naloxone (Narcan), often used to counteract opioid overdoses, is ineffective against meth overdoses.

Moreover, there are no approved medications available to treat or reverse affects of a meth overdose, complicating recovery efforts. Doherty warned that with proposed Medicaid cuts, essential funding for treatment programs could dwindle, potentially reversing the positive trends. “I don’t want to be overly dramatic, but I think people will die. That’s heartbreaking for staff who engage with these individuals daily. We have solutions; we just need the funding,” he lamented.

As Maine navigates these challenges, continued support for treatment services remains crucial in sustaining the progress made against overdose deaths.
