Tragic Incident in Lewiston: 4-Year-Old Jasper Smith Dies from Gunshot Wound
LEWISTON, ME – A 4-year-old boy, identified as Jasper Smith, tragically succumbed to a gunshot wound to the head on May 17, prompting an ongoing investigation by state police. Officials confirmed Smith’s identity on Wednesday and provided updates regarding the circumstances surrounding his death.
According to Maine State Police, the Lewiston Police Department received a 911 call at 4:55 a.m. from an apartment located at 93 Pierce St. Emergency responders arrived swiftly; however, despite their efforts, Smith was pronounced dead approximately two hours later at Central Maine Medical Center.
Investigators have revealed that a single 9mm handgun was located at the scene. This firearm is registered to 36-year-old Robert McCoy. Notably, several family members were present in the apartment at the time of the incident, although police have yet to disclose whether Smith or McCoy were residents of the unit.
The building, owned by Pierce 93 LLC, houses eight or more apartments, raising questions about the residential context and safety of the premises.
