Strong winds have created rough waters, particularly notable on Sebago Lake, where whitecaps presented hazardous conditions on Friday.
Herring advised against unnecessary outings on the water, highlighting the dangers posed by the cold temperatures and gusty winds. "You can have all of the safety items on your boat, but when the boat goes down, the boat goes down,” he stated, emphasizing the rapid onset of hypothermia one could face in such frigid waters.
In light of these dangers, Herring reminded boaters of essential safety equipment required on board, including life jackets, fire extinguishers, personal flotation devices, and navigation lights.
