Tush Push Declared Illegal in Maine High School Football

NFL’s Tush Push Controversy Impacts High School Football in Maine

Just over a week ago, NFL owners voted against banning the controversial "tush push" play, popularized by the Philadelphia Eagles. However, the play remains illegal in Maine high school football due to regulations that prohibit assisting the ball carrier.

According to a recent report by the Bangor Daily News, the Maine Principal Association (MPA) maintains a strict interpretation of the rule against "helping the runner," which clashes with the tush push. Ralph Damren, a rules interpreter for Maine football, explained that once a runner’s forward progress halts, the play is considered dead, regardless of whether teammates are attempting to push them forward. “We just kill the play and rule that the ball is dead right where it is,” Damren stated.

Referees have articulated that they will typically blow the play dead if a runner is aided by teammates, and may issue a penalty for more egregious violations. The National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) has detailed rules addressing this issue, emphasizing the importance of minimizing injury risks in a contact sport like football.

The NFHS Football Rules Committee aims to balance offensive and defensive play while ensuring player safety. The committee argues that allowing teams to "help the runner" disrupts this balance, favoring offensive teams significantly.

Despite proposed changes at higher levels of the game, school administrators and coaches must work collaboratively to uphold these regulations. The ethical obligation of coaches is to teach rules that prevent circumventing the spirit of the game, reinforcing the principle that winning should never overshadow character development. As the high school football season progresses, stakeholders are encouraged to prioritize safety and fairness in the game.
