Maine House Reaches Stalemate on Bill Proposing Ban on Transgender Girls in Women’s Sports

Maine House Fails to Reach Consensus on Transgender Sports Ban

Augusta, Maine — The Maine House of Representatives found itself in a stalemate on Friday over a contentious proposal aimed at prohibiting transgender girls from competing in sports that align with their gender identity. This issue gained national attention, particularly after former President Donald Trump criticized Maine’s policies, urging the state to implement a ban or face federal funding cuts.

For years, Maine has allowed transgender girls to participate in female sports under laws protecting against gender identity discrimination. However, Trump’s comments in February stirred political debate, particularly following a social media post from Rep. Laurel Libby, R-Auburn, highlighting a transgender student’s success in track and field.

During executive discussions, Trump clashed with Gov. Janet Mills, a Democrat, over the administration’s policies, threatening to withdraw federal funding unless Maine complies with his directives. Mills affirmed the state’s commitment to existing laws, which saw transgender girls competing this past school year.

On Friday, Representatives debated multiple Republican proposals. One of the notable proposals by Rep. Liz Caruso, R-Caratunk, sought to ban transgender females from competing in female sports and restrict access to gender-designated facilities in schools. The House ultimately deadlocked at 72-72 on a motion to advance this measure, with only one Democrat supporting it.

House Majority Leader Matt Moonen, D-Portland, opted to table the bill, suggesting that discussions would resume at a later date. Meanwhile, other GOP initiatives aimed at rescinding protections for transgender individuals were defeated, with a notable portion of Republicans joining Democrats against those measures.

Despite the prevailing debates, polling indicates a majority of Maine residents favor a ban on transgender female athletes in sports, presenting a complex landscape for lawmakers as discussions continue.
