Tragic House Fire in Wilton Claims Life of Local Woman
A woman has lost her life following a devastating house fire in Wilton early Saturday morning. The incident took place around midnight at a residence on Magrath Road, prompting quick responses from local authorities.
According to Shannon Moss, spokesperson for the Maine Department of Public Safety, 84-year-old Robert Adams managed to escape the blaze by jumping from a window. However, his partner, 81-year-old Sharon Rainey, was still trapped inside. A nearby neighbor, alongside Wilton police officers, bravely entered the residence through a window to rescue her.
Despite their efforts, Rainey sustained severe burns in the fire. Both she and Adams were initially taken to Franklin Memorial Hospital in Farmington and later transferred to Maine Medical Center in Portland for advanced treatment. Tragically, Rainey succumbed to her injuries shortly after arrival, leaving the community in mourning. Adams remains hospitalized in critical condition.
Additionally, the neighbor and several Wilton police officers who participated in the rescue efforts received treatment for smoke inhalation, highlighting the dangers faced by those who rushed to help.
Authorities are currently investigating the cause of the fire, with preliminary reports suggesting it may have started in the chimney. The community is left reeling from the loss, and officials are urging residents to remain vigilant about fire safety in their homes.
As investigations continue, local residents are reminded of the importance of ensuring smoke detectors are functional and fire safety measures are in place to prevent similar tragedies in the future. Further updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
