Hundreds Gather to Celebrate Juneteenth Throughout Maine

Celebrating Freedom at Juneteenth Downeast in Ellsworth

ELLSWORTH, ME — Hundreds came together at Knowlton Park on Thursday to commemorate "Juneteenth Downeast," a vibrant celebration marking the end of slavery in the United States. Families enjoyed a day filled with fun activities, local nonprofit booths, wellness offerings, and free food.

Juneteenth, observed on June 19, marks the announcement of emancipation in Texas back in 1865, two years after the Civil War’s conclusion. Recognized as a federal holiday since 2021, the day serves as a powerful reminder of America’s complex history.

Participants shared sentiments of urgency and gratitude for the holiday, especially amid contemporary political challenges. Michael Ellison from Amherst emphasized the importance of preserving Juneteenth, recalling when Martin Luther King Jr. Day became a federal holiday. He expressed a desire to prevent any erosion of this newfound recognition.

Event organizer Jacques Newell Taylor remarked on the significance of this year’s theme: "taking care of ourselves so we can take care of each other," highlighting community resilience in the face of political uncertainty. The event featured a variety of wellness activities, including yoga and tai chi, alongside children’s programming, local speakers, and a DJ. Nigerian chief Oscar Mokeme blessed attendees, underscoring the day’s cultural significance.

Attendees Nancy Corwin and Ricky Robinson, who relocated from New Mexico, expressed the necessity for diversity in Maine’s predominantly white landscape, noting that such events enrich community life.

The spirit of Juneteenth resonated widely, with celebrations also taking place in Biddeford, Freeport, Lewiston, Nobleboro, Scarborough, Westbrook, and York. As community members took part in this poignant day, the message was clear: Juneteenth is an essential part of America’s narrative, deserving recognition and celebration.
