Looking to Offset Fossil Fuels by Planting Trees? You’d Need the Entire North and Central America, Study Reveals

Press Article: Tree Planting Alone Insufficient to Offset Fossil Fuel Emissions, Study Finds

A new study reveals that planting trees, while beneficial for carbon capture, cannot adequately counteract the emissions generated by the world’s largest fossil-fuel companies. Researchers concluded that to compensate for future fossil fuel burning, trees would need to blanket the entire land area of North and Central America—an impractical and financially unfeasible proposal.

Scientists emphasize the necessity of removing carbon emissions rather than merely reducing them. Despite trees’ natural ability to absorb carbon dioxide through photosynthesis, the analysis shows that their potential for carbon removal pales in comparison to estimated emissions from the fossil fuel reserves held by the top 200 oil, gas, and coal corporations. The cost of planting enough trees would reach up to $10.8 trillion, exceeding these companies’ combined market valuation of $7.01 trillion.

Nina Friggens, a research fellow at the University of Exeter and co-author of the study published in Communications Earth & Environment, warns against viewing carbon offsetting as a magic solution. While tree planting is one of the most cost-effective methods for carbon offsetting, reliance solely on this approach may mislead the public.

Experts underscore the importance of diversifying carbon capture methods beyond just tree planting. Élane Ubalijoro, a forestry specialist, noted that effective tree planting also contributes to food security and biodiversity. Daphne Yin from Carbon180 expressed skepticism about the likelihood of fossil fuel companies ever accounting for their downstream emissions, labeling the idea a "fantasy."

Ultimately, experts agree: halting carbon emissions must be the primary focus. Jonathan Foley of Project Drawdown likened continuing emissions to leaving the taps running on an overflowing bathtub, stressing the need for immediate action.
