Press Article: Stockton Springs Launches Innovative "Dog Library" for Pups at Sandy Point Beach
Stockton Springs has introduced a charming new initiative to enhance the beach experience for dogs and their owners— a "dog library" stocked with free toys, primarily tennis balls and sticks. The project, spearheaded by George Russell, the town’s public works director, was inspired by a similar concept he encountered while vacationing in the Florida Keys.
Constructed from plywood and lumber, the library was installed just over a week ago at Sandy Point Beach, located at the mouth of the Penobscot River. Russell has been collecting used tennis balls from a local player, amassing about 100 balls that were previously discarded after limited use. He mentioned, “They would only use the tennis balls once or twice before they stop using them.”
The community response has been overwhelmingly positive, with the library attracting attention even beyond Stockton Springs. Local visitors like Ashley Henderson from Brewer and her two dogs, along with regulars such as Bob and his German Shepherd, Kermit, have found the library to be a delightful addition, reducing the need to search for playthings during beach outings.
Russell’s efforts, which he describes as both practical and personal—he himself has three best friends of the golden retriever variety—have resonated with the community, bringing joy to dogs and their owners alike. With continued interest, Russell plans to launch a second dog library near Cape Jellison Road and has received inquiries from other towns eager to replicate the concept.
“I never thought in a thousand years that it would take off like this,” Russell expressed. The innovative dog library not only benefits local pets but also fosters a sense of community among dog lovers in Stockton Springs.
