Ca phe sua da, the popular Vietnamese iced coffee mixed with sweet condensed milk, has been chosen as the national costume for Vietnam at the upcoming Miss Universe Pageant. At a press conference in Ho Chi Minh City, it was announced that Hoang Thuy, the first runner-up in Miss Universe Vietnam 2017 and Vietnam’s representative for Miss Universe 2019, will wear the costume designed by Nguyen Tran Minh Duc. The design celebrates one of Vietnam’s most beloved beverages and won through two rounds of voting, ultimately making it to the top three of the annual national costume design contest.
Hoang Thuy and the judging panel selected this “out-of-the-box” design for its creativity. This selection reflects a trend of incorporating Vietnamese culinary symbols into national costumes, as seen last year when a banh mi outfit was showcased at the Miss Universe 2018 contest by H’Hen Nie, who finished in the top five.
During the press conference, Hoang Thuy expressed her affection for the ca phe sua da-inspired costume and hopes it brings her success in the forthcoming competition in the United States. However, the costume has received mixed reactions from fans of the Miss Universe Vietnam contest, with many suggesting it lacks the elegance seen in other finalists’ designs. Despite mixed views, the selection highlights Vietnam’s unique cultural representation on an international stage.
