Safe Training During a Heat Wave: 3 Key Strategies

Press Release: Fighting the Heat – How Martial Artists Can Train Safely This Summer

As summer temperatures rise, martial artists are faced with the challenge of maintaining their training regimens without compromising safety. This dilemma will be highlighted at the much-anticipated ONE Friday Fights 114, featuring #3 ranked bantamweight contender Felipe Lobo against Kulabdam Sor Jor Piek Uthai at Lumpinee Stadium in Bangkok, Thailand, on June 27. Both fighters, accustomed to training in extreme heat and humidity, represent the dedication required to perform at peak levels in these conditions.

To help martial artists and athletes train safely during the hot months, experts suggest several key strategies focusing on hydration, timing, and recognizing warning signs of heat-related issues.

Hydration and Nutrition: Athletes should prioritize hydration by consuming 16 to 20 ounces of water at least two hours prior to workout sessions and continue sipping during activity. For extended training, sports drinks or coconut water can replenish lost electrolytes. Light meals consisting of easily digestible carbohydrates are recommended pre-training, while heavier meals should wait until after exercise.

Timing and Location: For safe training, early morning or late evening sessions are ideal, as midday temperatures can be significantly higher. If training outdoors, seek shaded areas to reduce exposure to heat radiated from surfaces like concrete and asphalt. Consider modifying usual training spots to cooler, shaded environments.

Safety and Warning Signs: Awareness of heat exhaustion and heat stroke is critical. Symptoms of heat exhaustion include heavy sweating and dizziness, while heat stroke is a medical emergency marked by high body temperature and confusion. Training with a partner can help identify symptoms early; a simple check-in system can prevent a dangerous situation.

By implementing these strategies, martial artists can efficiently train while safeguarding their health as summer heat peaks.
