Arrest Made in Campground Homicide: New Details Emerge
UNION, Maine — Following the recent arrest of 17-year-old Deven Young in connection with the homicide of Sunshine “Sunny” Stewart, details surrounding the investigation have begun to surface. Katharine Lunt, owner of the Mic Mac Cove Family Campground, addressed the media on Saturday, clarifying misinformation that had circulated online regarding the Young family’s history at the campground.
Lunt confirmed that the Young family, from Frankfort, had been seasonal campers since 2024 and emphasized they were never asked to leave the premises. She stated that if there had been genuine concerns or prior threats, Young would have been considered a primary suspect from the onset of the investigation.
The unraveling of events began when state police interviewed campers, collecting voluntary DNA samples. On July 16, Deven Young approached investigators with information, leading them to an area near where Stewart’s body was later discovered. He was subsequently interviewed by police and arrested on the same day.
Obtaining surveillance footage from the campground proved crucial; it showed Young going out in a boat before Stewart left for paddleboarding. When Stewart did not return by midnight, Lunt reported her missing, prompting a search which led to the grim discovery of her body. Post-mortem examinations revealed Stewart, 48, had been strangled and suffered blunt force trauma.
While Young is charged as a juvenile, the Maine attorney general’s office seeks to try him as an adult. The next court hearing will determine if further details can be disclosed. Lunt expressed the community’s shock and devastation, stating they never suspected the alleged murderer was among them as they searched for Stewart.
