George Danby to Join Maine Press Association Hall of Fame
Longtime Bangor Daily News cartoonist George Danby will be honored with a prestigious induction into the Maine Press Association’s Hall of Fame this fall. Danby, who published his first cartoon in the BDN in 1975 while still a student at Bangor High School, has made a significant impact on the state’s media landscape over nearly four decades.
Following his initial stint at the BDN, Danby broadened his artistic career with publications such as the Providence Journal-Bulletin and the New Haven Register, before returning to the Bangor Daily News in 1985. Since then, his daily cartoons have provided insight, humor, and poignancy to the paper’s opinion pages, capturing the political and social evolution of Maine through the lens of various public figures, from nine U.S. presidents to seven state governors.
Danby’s work is not only celebrated locally but has also gained national recognition, appearing in prominent publications such as The Washington Post, The New York Times, Time, and USA Today.
Joining Danby in this year’s Hall of Fame class are photojournalist John Ewing and the late reporter Dennis Hoey, both recognized for their contributions to the Portland Press Herald. The trio will be honored during the Maine Press Association’s annual conference in South Portland on October 18.
Danby’s induction shines a light on his dedication to capturing the essence of Maine through his art, reflecting the complexities of political life and everyday experiences in the state. His long-standing commitment to journalism continues to resonate with readers and aspiring artists alike.
