Deer Isle-Stonington Elementary School (DISES) experienced a major shakeup as Principal Jane O’Connor and curriculum coordinator Lynne Witham resigned, leaving the community confused and upset. CSD 13 Superintendent Dan Ross announced the resignations, leading to a series of emergency meetings and communication changes. The school board called for votes to fill eight vacant positions, including a new principal, curriculum coordinator, and teachers.
In a surprising turn of events, O’Connor was named a candidate for the curriculum coordinator position. The board will be asked to expand the position to full-time at a meeting on Aug. 16. Discussions on a “Plan for Return to School” and citizen comments are also on the agenda. Ross stated that O’Connor and Witham’s resignations were a significant setback for the school.
Ross faced backlash from the community, prompting him to hold meetings to address concerns. O’Connor expressed hope for the school’s future despite the recent events, emphasizing progress made in creating a healthier environment. Witham cited ongoing staffing issues as a key reason for her resignation.
Parents and community members expressed sadness and concern over the resignations, with some highlighting the need for more consistency and communication in the school system. The situation at DISES continues to unfold, with the focus on ensuring a smooth opening for the upcoming school year.
