Maine residents were reminded that winter isn’t entirely over yet as a period of snow is forecasted for Thursday, breaking up the recent streak of spring-like weather. Temperatures in the mid to high 40s at the beginning of the week will give way to snowfall in south central, southwest, and western Maine. National Weather Service forecasters predict 3 to 5 inches of accumulation in those regions, with temperatures staying above freezing, leading to a slushy mix that may disrupt travel.
Moving towards central and northeastern Maine, snowfall totals will be less than one inch, mixing with intermittent rainfall. Daytime highs in those regions will be in the low to mid 30s. Northern communities, especially in Aroostook County, can expect around 1 to 2 inches of snowfall with patchy fog impacting travel. Further south in Down East and midcoast communities, daytime highs will be in the 40s with just a quarter of an inch of snowfall expected.
Temperatures will drop significantly as the weekend approaches, with northern Maine expecting daytime highs in the teens, central and eastern Maine in the mid to low 20s, and southern and western Maine in the low 30s to mid 20s. Periods of snow may persist through the weekend in northern communities before a gradual warming trend early next week. Some Down East and midcoast communities may see intermittent snowfall into Friday morning.
