Angus King III, Son of U.S. Senator, Launches Campaign for Governor of Maine

Angus King III Announces Run for Maine Governor

Portland, ME – Angus King III, a prominent businessman and advocate for renewable energy, has officially declared his candidacy for governor of Maine, setting the stage for what is expected to be a competitive race. This announcement comes as current Governor Janet Mills is term-limited and cannot seek re-election in 2026.

King, the son of U.S. Senator Angus King Jr., is a Portland Democrat who aims to foster economic growth and support small businesses across the state. In a statement, he emphasized his commitment to building a better future for Maine, focusing on affordability and innovation. “I’m running for governor to build a better Maine – where it’s easier to start and grow a small business,” he stated.

As the founder of Peaks Renewables, King has been involved in numerous sustainability projects, including an anaerobic digester in Clinton that produces natural gas from cow manure. His father, who served as Maine’s governor from 1995 to 2003 and has been a U.S. Senator since 2013, praised his son’s qualifications, describing him as “hard-working, smart, engaged, and caring.”

King joins a growing field of candidates which includes fellow Democrats Secretary of State Shenna Bellows and former Senate President Troy Jackson, both vying for the governor’s seat. Seven individuals have already filed campaign finance paperwork, laying the groundwork for a potentially crowded primary election.

While Democratic contenders are solidifying their runs, speculation surrounding Republican candidates is also brewing, with names like former U.S. Rep. Bruce Poliquin and Senate Minority Leader Trey Stewart mentioned in conversations.

Candidates must submit signatures to qualify for the ballot by March 16, 2026, with primary elections scheduled for June 9, 2026. The political landscape in Maine is about to heat up as King’s announcement adds notable momentum to the upcoming electoral contest.
