A devastating insect infestation is threatening Tunisia’s crucial prickly pear industry, causing significant concerns for farmers and agricultural experts. The cochineal insect, which sucks sap from cactus pads, has caused widespread damage to plantations since its discovery in 2021. Prickly pears are a vital source of revenue for Tunisia, covering approximately 12% of agricultural land and providing income for thousands, particularly women who harvest and sell the fruit.
Efforts are being made to combat the insect’s impact, with the Food and Agriculture Organization launching a $500,000 emergency project to introduce biological control methods like ladybugs. The Tunisian Ministry of Agriculture is also promoting sustainable control measures, such as changes in agricultural practices and cleaning of production areas. However, the situation remains challenging, with farmers like Bassem Sahnoun struggling to protect their healthy trees and livelihoods.
Despite these efforts, some farmers, like Selma Jridi, feel helpless in the face of the crisis, stating that “God’s will prevails” as their trees continue to deteriorate. The severity of the situation underscores the urgent need for a sustainable solution to combat the cochineal insect and prevent further damage to Tunisia’s crucial prickly pear industry.
