Do the deaths in Gaza have any importance to Hamas or Israel?

The BDN Opinion section remains independent and does not affect news policies or editing of articles in the newspaper or online. The Palestinian death toll in Gaza has reached 40,000 since Hamas attacks on Israeli settlements last October, with daily civilian deaths increasing. While Israel’s response was provoked, it has been deemed disproportionate, leading to protests in Western cities. However, most Palestinians in Gaza are too focused on survival to protest. Demonstrations in Israel focus on bringing Jewish hostages home rather than the fate of Palestinians.

Hamas’ attacks on Israel were aimed at inciting violence and derailing peace efforts, with the goal of gaining support for the Palestinian cause. Netanyahu’s need for a prolonged conflict is driven by political reasons, including delaying a public inquiry and maintaining his coalition. The responsibility to enforce a cease-fire falls on the United States, but it is uncertain if President Biden will take action.

Predictions of a cease-fire and hostage release have not come to fruition, as the conflict continues with no clear resolution in sight. The possibility of a larger crisis involving Israel and Hezbollah could further escalate tensions in the region. Without intervention from influential parties, the deadly conflict in Gaza is likely to persist.
