Twenty-Year Presque Isle Hockey Coach Retires After 120,000 Miles Spent on the Bus

After a 20-year run as head hockey coach at Presque Isle High School, Dr. Carl Flynn announced his retirement, reflecting on memories made and lessons learned during his tenure. With 201-150-12 regular season record, including six Class B North championship game appearances and a regional title in 2009, Flynn led his Wildcat teams to success on the ice.

Reflecting on spending 120,000 miles on a yellow school bus as the most traveled high school sports team in the state, Flynn acknowledged learning new things from his players, including how to text on a flip phone, diversifying his vocabulary and fashion sense.

Despite stepping down due to increased work as a physician, an extensive travel schedule, and the passing of his father, Flynn expressed pride in the team and the program’s success. He plans to stay connected by attending home games and supporting the team in any way he can.

Known for the exciting moments before games and multiple playoff successes, Flynn reminisces on big wins against top-seeded teams and the emotional experiences of coaching his son and daughter. He hopes his assistant coach, Darren Carlisle, will take over the coaching role.

Leaving behind a legacy of dedication, learning, and success, Flynn’s retirement marks the end of an era at Presque Isle High School, where he made a lasting impact on the players, community, and the program as a whole.
